Measuring the Information Society Report 2017’: Mauritius ranks 1st in Africa

According to the 9th edition of the Measuring the Information Society (MIS) Report published by the International Telecommunication Union and released on 15th November 2017, Mauritius ranks 1st in Africa and 72nd worldwide in the ICT development Index.

The ICT Development Index (IDI) featured in the MIS report is a unique benchmark measuring the development progress of ICT in countries around the world. In 2017, Iceland tops the IDI rankings.

In the African region, Mauritius ranks in the upper half of the global IDI distribution, which 28 of the 39 African countries included in IDI 2017 ranked in the lowest quartile of least connected countries. The average value for Africa is 2.64 points, a little over half the global average of 5.11. It is to be noted that the region includes two of the three countries that brought the most dynamic improvements in their IDI value over the year, these are Namibia and Gabon.

The IDI shows that there are considerable differences in the levels if ICT development between geographic regions. Europe has the highest average IDI value among world regions with 7.50 points. There are also important variations among individual countries within each region. These differences in IDI between regions and individual countries are primarily associated with levels of economic development.

The ‘Measuring the information Society Report’ is widely recognized as a key measurement of reference for the state of global ICT development and is extensively relied upon by governments, international organisations, development banks, private sector analysts and investors worldwide.
